Fawehinmi's family rejects Centenary Award

The family of the late Nigerian human rights activist and lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi has on his behalf rejected the Centenary Award that was to be given to the deceased. The family in a letter to the Secretary of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, has stated reasons why the award was rejected. One of the reasons which was linked with the recent Boko Haram attacks in some Northern states. They also stated that the former military dictator that tortured Gani Fawehinmi during his regime, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida was also listed amongst the awardees.

The letter signed by the late Gani's son, Muhammad Fawehinmi concluded that if the late activist were to be alive, he would have also declined the award.
