Fawehinmi's family rejects Centenary Award

The family of the late Nigerian human rights activist and lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi has on his behalf rejected the Centenary Award that was to be given to the deceased. The family in a letter to the Secretary of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, has stated reasons why the award was rejected. One of the reasons which was linked with the recent Boko Haram attacks in some Northern states. They also stated that the former military dictator that tortured Gani Fawehinmi during his regime, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida was also listed amongst the awardees.

The letter signed by the late Gani's son, Muhammad Fawehinmi concluded that if the late activist were to be alive, he would have also declined the award.

The Real Pleasure

It's another start of the week (Sunday) and we will be motivating ourselves today again.

Some talented youths tend to lose hope in their career of choice when people around them like friends and family tell they they cannot do it and the reasons why they can't. I've always say you shouldn't allow people around you to affect your success. These people will be ready to give a thousand and one (1001) reasons why you should not continue with your career of choice. Your ability to give them just ONE reason that supersede the 1001 reasons makes you continue and succeed in the end. When they tell you all sort of things, just tell them you can do it simply because you believe you can. Many have fell due to pressure from people that "like" them.

Walter Gagehot once said and I quote: "A great pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do". Why not earn yourself such pleasure? They tell you that you cannot do it because you are a female; because you are not strong; because you are not brilliant; because you are too young. Just tell them you can because you believe you can. Don't let anyone reduce your morale as par your career of choice. Strive, achieve the unachievable, do the "undoable", succeed where people of your calibre have never succeeded, rise up beyond your limits, and you will get the real pleasure of doing what they say you cannot do.

The Real Financial Recklessness - by Taslim OKUNOLA

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi knew quite well that his courage and boldness to expose their theft will land him in suspension. He said he wonder why it took them so long to take that action. He said it was long overdue.

MY TAKE: They couldn't suspend him so quick because they were looking for something to tell Nigerians he did. They couldn't find one so fast coz of his transparency and accountability.

Now, they eventually came up with "Financial Recklessness and Misconduct".

Under your administration, $20bn was missing in NNPC, that sure is not financial recklessness.

Under your administration, you have 10 Presidential Jets in your hangar and you use our money to maintain then every year. That is also not financial recklessness, right?

Under your adminstration, you keep squandering money on any individual or group that supports you. Nigerian Football Supporters Club made you grand patron and you gave out 50 million naira just like that! FIFTY MILLION NAIRA and you don't call that financial recklessness.

Then, how more can we define financial recklessness?

Re: Why can’t he just be like everyone else? – by Taslim OKUNOLA

This article is in reply to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s article on the new anti-gay law in Nigeria. I’m neither a poet nor a novelist. So, I will go straight to my reply without telling the story of Sochukwuma or Chukwumaso. Also, this article might also contain some grammatical blunders that I will want English speakers to pardon me for; English is not my mother tongue anyway. To start with, I don’t think there is any genetic or biological evidence for the fact that some guys are born gay. Homosexuality is a choice often caused by depression, anxiety and self-destructive behaviour. Let us assume like you presumed that some like Sochukwuma are born gay. Study shows that about 1.7% of the world’s population are gay or lesbian. If their population is that minute, then such abnormalities, if natural, should be corrected instead of promoted. We have worse cases that have been corrected and cured by able doctors.

Chimamanda wrote and I quote: “But is shows a failure of our democracy, because the mark of a true democracy is not in the rule of the majority but in the protection of its majority”. I want to emphatically counter this statement by saying that democracy is made for the majority. It symbolises the voice of the masses which are regarded as the majority in any democratic nation’s economic hierarchy. If you say the mark of a true democracy is not in the rule of the majority, why can’t someone with the least votes that represent the minority be made to rule the nation? And it was agreed upon by the majority of those we voted in to represent us (the masses) in the National Assembly. What a constitutional law it is! Drafting and signing of this law might not be our priority in this country where we have bigger problems, but this is just an issue of multitasking because while the entire event was unfolding, other things were also being done.

Gay and Lesbianism is by all means against the law of nature which makes it abnormal. Anal sex which is also under major criticisms is the only hope of gays to have sex with each other. They insert a reproductive organ into an excretory organ. Do you think that is ideal? Lesbians also go about doing all sorts of masturbation which are hazardous to their well-being. Also talking about the fact that homosexuals in Nigeria don’t ask for same sex marriage, they will one day if it is not curbed this way. Announcing one’s sexual orientation as a homosexual publicly started because the act wasn't curbed. Well, it’s the truth that both straight and gays molest children but statistics show that child molestation is more common with the gays and lesbians. And the explanation is easy, they do not get gays or lesbians like them everywhere because they are minute. Do you recommend that these people be allowed to adopt our motherless babies? Gay and Lesbianism is “unafrican” as they say. Anything African should pertain to our culture and same sex union is never part of our culture. Although the passage of the law might be said to be “unafrican” but the practice is also “unafrican”.

P.S: I am not representing anybody or any group with this reply. This is my own candid opinion on the article written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Overconfidence

One word, fatal effect. Overconfidence destroys career. It's good to be confident but too much of good is bad. When your confidence overflows, it drowns your success. What causes overconfidence? EGO/PRIDE. When your ego is too high, you become overconfident by default. It's good to believe in oneself. In fact, one of the ingredients of success is CONFIDENCE but OVERCONFIDENCE is also one of the ingredients of failure.

When you kill your pride and ego, you begin to rise to success. Speak less of your achievements or what you intend to achieve. Don't let overconfidence ride you. Overconfidence is a force that has in one way or the other affected every human. But your ability to manipulate and eliminate it makes you triumph.
