Don't relent

Most people tend to relent after attaining certain heights in their choice of career. When they realise that they've made more than what they expect, they slow down. I won't say names here but we are all aware that there are lots of brands and companies in Nigeria and all over the world that rose to fame sometimes ago but now defunct. Why should you relent? Do you think you can maintain the height that you are without working harder? That's a NO! Let's do some little Physics. A projectile can only reach the maximum height when thrown at an angle of 45 degrees. But do you know that even after reaching the maximum height, the object has to fall down?

It's also same with one's career. If you could project yourself at angle 45 degrees to meet the maximum height, you should have prepared a flight device with you to keep you in that maximum height throughout your lifespan. Most business crises occur because there is inadequate plan at the start of the business. You should make heavy plans before starting any business so it won't crash on the way. Plan on how you will be reinvesting the capital so that you won't lose your capital. Also plan on how you will be maximising your profit and investing part of it and insure your business to safeguard it from unforeseen events. PLANNING is the key. Build your career and business on a solid plan, stay focused, don't relent and you will enjoy every bit of it throughout.

Job and Career

Is what you are doing just a job or your career? Most people don't know this but as a reader of TOB, you must know that there is a clear, vivid and obvious difference between a job and a career. If you have a job, you are not yet fulfilled but when you are in your career, you are already living a fulfilled life. Wiktionary defines job to be an economic role for which a person is paid while it defines career to be one's calling in life or an individual's work and life roles over their lifespan.

From those definitions, you can see that all careers are jobs but not all jobs are careers. The type of job that I will be explaining in this context is the one that does not align with one's career. Let me give you an instance of how great minds take their job and career. Assuming, I wanna be a movie producer (my career) but I don't have the capital to start. I might go for jobs like teaching, civil service or even acting so that I can gather capital for my career (movie production). This is how it should be. No matter what happens, always remember your goal, your career, your fulfillment and work towards it.

The difference between you and your counterpart in the same career is not finances but the talent. If he/she has the money and started earlier, that doesn't mean you won't succeed in the same career if you gather your capital for 15 years. The richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote wasn't the first to start a business but he has the talent of business management and he applied that with the N500,000 capital he borrowed from his grandfather. Was he the first person to start business? Some people even started with their own money which is worth N1m but what Dangote has achieved with N500,000 loan is more than what they can ever boast of.

The story of Dangote should tell you a lot. The Nigerian motivational blogger, Taslim OKUNOLA once said: "Don't look at the present resources. Instead, always see into the future for that is where the real you lies."

Don't be sad when you don't get what you want

This is a situation that many of us don't take likely. Assuming you wanna apply for a scholarship and you couldn't get the application fee until after the application deadline. You will surely feel bad, won't you? It's actually normal to feel that way but I will strongly advise you not to let such occurrences or similar ones weigh you down at all. When something is lost and you know it's lost forever, thinking about it makes you feel down and not motivated. When you keep thinking about it, you feel sad; you quit thinking about the future; you quit setting great goals for yourself; you feel that is the end.

But certainly, that is not the end. An anonymous quote clearly stated that: "Never lose hope. You never know what tomorrow may bring". One of the Dalai Lama's of Tibetan also said: "Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck". Then, why should you feel bad? Great people don't think about the past because there is already a lot to think about in the future. Never feel sad when you don't get what you want or when you narrowly missed an opportunity because there are still lots of opportunities to explore. Feeling sad won't earn you anything but make you lose the coming opportunities. As a great mind and reader of TOB, I want you to quit thinking about lost opportunities at the very point they were lost and start hunting for coming ones while preparing for the giant future ahead of you. YES, YOU CAN.

Never fear failure

Are you the kind of person that fears failure? Like you wanna do an exam and all you are thinking is that, "I'm scared, what if I fail this exam again?". That is one thought that can never find its way to my mind. Even if you've been trying and failing all this while, that doesn't mean you should fear failure. If you fear failure then you are far from success. A veteran American stand-up performer, Bill Cosby, once said: "In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear for failure"

Using the previous example, he simply meant: instead of thinking that, "I'm scared, what if I fail this exam again" think that, "I really wanna pass this exam and I believe I'm gonna pass it". Even the popular TV giant, Oprah Winfrey said, "You become what you believe". Instead of fearing failure, desire for success the more and believe in yourself. If President Barack Obama was fearing that he might lose the Presidential Election in 2008 as a Black candidate, he wouldn't have contested. But he desired for success, believed in himself and his capability and worked towards the outstanding success he is still enjoying till date. You are destined for outstanding greatness, just make sure while trying to achieve the greatness, you don't fear failure. YES, YOU CAN.

What you think you can do, you can do

Do you think you can draw but don't have the courage to do so? You think you can sing but you lack courage to carry it out. These and many more are the instances of what most people suffer and later on backslide to failure. Been able to carry out your talent is what courage is all about. Whatever you think you can do, summon courage and work towards it now. Most people are living an unfulfilled life because they don't have the courage to exhibit what they think they can do.

A veteran American author, Anais Nin, once said, "Life shrinks or expand in proportion to one's courage". This means the life around you will refuse to expand to your satisfaction if you don't have the courage to work towards what you think you can do. Do you think there will be airplanes in this world if nobody thought we could fly and had the courage to work towards it? Do you think we would be able to explore outer space if nobody thought we could get to other planets and had the courage to work towards it?

Those two examples look stupid! Try to imagine a world without airplane and imagine two brothers telling the whole world that they can fly. It looks stupid, doesn't it? But when they flew the first aircraft, the idea started making sense and people developed more sophisticated airplanes later on. That is how what you think you can do looks stupid to you and even people you tell until you have the courage to carry it out and excel in it. That you did it and failed in the first attempt or even first twenty attempts doesn't mean you can't do it. Keep trying and you will be a success; even an outstanding one. You can do what you think you can do. YES, YOU CAN.

Be motivated and not intimidated

This world is a world of diversity; diverse in language, diverse in culture, diverse in people and so on. You can never be loved by everyone. This means you will always get two types of comments from people; the good and the bad. Some people can go to the extent of condemning you and your work to your face. All they wanna achieve is making you feel inferior, making you feel intimidated. But do you know that such comments don't bother great mind?

I believe once you found your way to this blog, you are in our success train and you are a great mind yourself. Some people are out there watching out for your mistakes. Once you make them, they lambaste you like they are so clean without blemish. From now on, I want you to take any negative compliment as a stepping stone to your own success. Even when you truly fail, don't look down on yourself that you cannot progress again. Don't let the failure or what people say intimidate you, use them as stepping stones to an outstanding success. DON'T FEEL INTIMIDATED, FEEL MOTIVATED by those incidences. Yes, you can.

Be prepared and be at alert!

Always be prepared. You love to draw but you have never practised drawing; then you are nothing but a novice in drawing. Your talent can only be processed into a professional career when you learn more about it and practise it. Be prepared and be at alert. Opportunities to exhibit the giant inside you won't come and meet you while you are inactive. You need to be on the lookout for them. Also, these opportunities won't foretell you before they come, so you have to be ever prepared.

An anonymous quote once stated that: "When preparation meets opportunities, destiny is born". Judging from this quote, I will say, "for you to get your destiny given birth to, be prepared and be at alert". You are talented only when you are good with the talent. The difference between a talented person and a learner is not that the talented won't learn the profession at all. The difference is that the talented person will learn faster and also be exceptional when practising it as a lifetime career. Instead of letting your talent burn, go out there, develop it and also be awakened, attentive and at alert for any coming opportunities.

The Voice Within

What do I mean by "The Voice Within"? I mean the voice inside of you. I don't know if you have ever felt something is talking to you from the inside on a thing you wanna do; maybe pushing you to do it or telling you not to. That is what I meant by the voice within. Sometimes, this voice can be right and sometimes it can be wrong. You wanna exhibit your talent and this voice is telling you not to. Believe in yourself and get the voice silenced.

The post impressionist painter of Dutch origin, Vincent Willem Van Gogh once said and I quote: "If you hear a voice within you that says, 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced". Following that quote, I will now say, "If you hear a voice within you that says, 'you cannot succeed,' then by all means succeed and the voice will be silenced". Most of the times, the voice might not be from the inside of you. It might be people around you that tag you as failure. Tell them to their face that they didn't make you, so they can't predict your future. You are more than who everyone sees you to be. Awake the giant inside of you and silence all negative voices. YES, YOU CAN.

The Impact of Peer Group

I need to upload this write-up now so that most people that might likely want to think "Teamwork" and "Peer Group" are the same can be cleared. They are different. Peer Group means the group of friends, colleagues and associates you move with. An adage says, "show me your friend and I will tell you who you are". This means you are who you move with. You have to be extra careful of the kind of friends you move with. Friends can enhance your success and can also mar your destiny.

If you move with persistent smokers and you don't smoke, you are gonna be a smoker too. Birds of same feather flock together. Try to move with friends that have great vision; friends that dream of their future and act towards fulfilling the dream; friends that do nothing but motivate you and encourage you to work harder for your success. Unfriend any friend that is not adding any form of value to your life. I still consider positive friends as the most valuable asset someone can ever have. Most people tend to learn more from and listen more to their friend than their parents. This shows the impact peer groups do have on individual. Assess your friends today and try to seperate the products from the shafts. SUCCESS IS YOURS!

The Power of Teamwork

Teamwork is a work done by a group of people that agreed with each other. There cannot be teamwork without a good network of relationship amidst the participants. Teamwork is very essential in whatever we do. Teamwork boosts the morale of the individuals involved in the teamwork. An adage says, "one tree cannot make a forest". Before Sagano Bamboo forest in Japan can be named the most beautiful forest in the world, it requires the collective work of each and every beautiful tree in the forest.

An adage also says, "united we stand, divided we fall". For you to be the best, you need a team of like minds. If you are a student you need to read collectively, so, what you don't know can be explained to you by someone who knows it in your group and also vice-versa. If you are a worker, you need a team of some closely-related workers to always work with you and help you out when there is problem."Team is a rim that drives your dream to the extreme" - Taslim OKUNOLA . The best of works are those done in teams. Teamwork is very important in all fields of life. And make sure while picking your team, it doesn't comprise of people with diverse priorities,

What is your excuse?

We are in a world where various people give excuses for their shortcomings all the time. What is your excuse for failing? You think your excuse is that you are not intelligent like the guy next door? You think your excuse is that you don't have enough financial resources to carry out your plans for the future? And you believe these excuses of yours are the reasons why you can never succeed? YOU ARE VERY MISTAKENED.

There is no successful person that has a smooth life from the start. Even the rich cry, so don't say because some are rich from the start, they have smooth lives. That does not guarantee a smooth life. All the successes had to pass through various hurdles in life. Consider your excuses as life hurdles. Strategize how you can bypass them to succeed. It is possible. The founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale once said: "I attribute my success to this: I never gave or took any excuse". Don't give excuses. Turn incidents that wanna be excuses into stepping stones to success. YES, YOU CAN

Why not you?

This is a very sensitive question that everyone should ask him/herself using his/her heart. Most people feel inferior just because some "superior" colleagues of theirs are  really excelling in their choice of career. They start to believe that their failure and the success of their colleagues are normal things that are bound to happen. It will get to a point that they won't put their effort in anything they do again because they are candid sure they are not going to succeed. Is this one belief you do have? If yes, then you are so wrong. YOU CAN BE BETTER THAN THEM. You were built to be the best.

Why not you? Why not you in their place and them in yours? If you believe you can't perform better than them, then you can't. You need to believe in your capability. Let's access your excelling colleagues collectively: do they have two heads each? NO; do they have three hands? NO; do they have an extra brain? NOT AT ALL. Then, why can't you perform better than they do? It's simply because your priorities are different. Things you do are your priorities. Failure occurs when your priority doesn't match your personality.

Assuming, one of your colleagues watch movies always but take his time to do 2 hours reading a day and excel. You may not be able to do the same and excel because the two of you have different personalities. You might need 5 hours reading a day to excel like him and more than 5 hours to supersede him. That is why it is important that you discover yourself. Another factor is that you may not be in the career you are good at and that same career is what your colleague is good at. The solution to that is that you should change to something you can do not something everyone is doing. IT CAN BE YOU! YOU CAN DO IT!! GO FOR THE GOLD!!!

ETIQUETTE: Introduction to Etiquette

According to an English dictionary, etiquette is the forms required by good breeding, or prescribed by authority, to be observed in social or official life; observance of the proprieties of rank and occasion; conventional decorum; ceremonial code of polite society.

Etiquette is one important thing that the world of today lacks. Youths of today don't care about etiquette anymore. Lack of etiquette do give rise some antisocial behaviours amongst the youths. Etiquette is one important thing that should be given attention to because it moulds life meaningfully. Even though etiquette is always reinforced at official events, the need for individuals to have etiquette is still very important. This is because most of us spend most of our lifetime out of official arena.

Etiquette is inculcated in most cultures and religions but some people still don't care that that is that. You just see them yell in public anyhow, ask a friend for something without an atom of politeness, eat in public anyhow and so many other despicable things. The fact that you are not in your office or in some high class events doesn't mean you should drop your etiquette.

Let us all embrace etiquette for this world to be a better place to live.
